It’s safe to say that, five years ago, few corporate leaders gave a thought to the supply of batteries. Nowadays the problems and opportunities of the battery supply chain are hot topics in executive suites far beyond the automotive industry, and a growing number of market research companies are churning out detailed reports on the sector.

Strategy Analytics has been covering the automotive electronics field for some 30 years, and has recently released a pair of Electric Vehicle Service reports that address current trends in the cell game.

Electric Vehicle Battery Outlook 2020-2029 describes current trends in the battery industry (soaring demand, increasing capacity), as well as assessments of battery pack and cell production in major markets around the world.

Electric Vehicle Batteries explains technical trends in the industry, including the rise of LFP chemistries, descriptions of many other chemistries and designs (lithium-metal, lithium-sulfur, metal-air, niobium anode, silicon anode, sodium-ion, solid-state, etc). It covers battery management systems, the race to reduce the use of cobalt, new topologies such as cell-to-chassis and cell-to-pack, recycling and more.

“With further incentives promoting electric vehicle use and some countries mandating [ICE bans], automakers are adjusting their businesses to become all-electric, causing a rapid increase in the demand for electrification,” says Strategy Analytics Principal Analyst Kevin Mak, the author of the two new reports. “The resulting levels of battery demand growth have also been rapid. This has led to higher cost in battery materials, leading to developments in diversifying battery chemistry. With the concentration of battery material processing and cell production in China, there have also been developments in further localizing material processing and cell production in Europe and North America.”
