Mercedes-Benz announces plans for its new eSprinter electric van

Mercedes-Benz has announced that production of the electric version of its popular Sprinter van will start in the second half of 2023, in both North America and Europe. The new eSprinter is set to launch in the US and Canada in the second half of 2023, and the market launch in Europe will follow towards the end of 2023.

The range, based on a simulation using the WLTP cycle, will be up to 400 kilometers.

The eSprinter’s eATS powertrain features a new motor and a new electric rear axle. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) is available in two power levels, with 100 or 150 kilowatts of peak output, and delivers torque of up to 400 newton-meters. The rear axle makes several cab chassis variants possible, in addition to the classic panel van. Maximum gross vehicle weight is up to 4.25 tons, and trailer towing capacity is up to 2 tons.

Mercedes will offer three different battery pack options for the eSprinter: 56, 81 or 113 kilowatt-hours. The first version to launch will be the panel van variant with the 113 kWh battery pack.

The new eSprinter’s on-board charger has a maximum output of 11 kW. DC fast charging happens at power levels up to 115 kW.

Mercedes-Benz has invested around 350 million euros in the new eSprinter. Around 50 million euros are to be invested in each of the three plants in Charleston, Düsseldorf, and Ludwigsfelde to adapt their production.

Mathias Geison, the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, states that the company is “taking the electric large van segment to a new level. The triad of efficiency, range and load capacity with simultaneous TCO optimization makes the new eSprinter the most versatile Mercedes-Benz e-van ever.”
