Charged EVs | VIA Motors secures order for 2,000 Class 3 electric chassis cabs

VIA Motors is one of the most venerable names in the commercial EV space—we’ve been covering the company since its 2010 founding. The company got a lot of early press, thanks to its mediagenic chairman, the unlikely EV pioneer Bob Lutz, but later dropped off the radar. The commercial EV market has been frustratingly slow to develop, but unlike many companies founded around that time, VIA is very much alive.

Now the company has received a purchase order for 2,000 Class 3 electric cutaway chassis cabs from Pegasus Specialty Vehicles. Pegasus will use VIA’s chassis to build Type A school buses, electric shuttles and paratransit buses.

The VIA-based Pegasus bus will feature a 400 hp motor, a 180-mile range, all-wheel drive, low floor height and a tight turning radius. Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the units will range from 12,500 to 14,000 pounds, and payload will range from 7,000 to 8,200 pounds.

Pegasus has an agreement with Creative Bus Sales, which has a network of 23 dealers throughout the US and Canada, to support the sale and servicing of its vehicles. In total, Pegasus has 56 dealer sales and service centers.

“Our customers are looking for new and better solutions, and the Pegasus Type A school buses, electric shuttle and paratransit bus bodies on the VIA Electric Chassis provide us with exactly that,” said Jason Hohalok, Sales Manager for Creative Bus Sales California.

“With our innovative electric commercial vehicles, we can provide an EV solution to not only the bus, shuttle and transit segments, but also to many of the commercial segments,” said Bob Purcell, CEO of VIA Motors.
