Fulcrum wheels add a new Speed 360 disc brake disc on the eve of the individual time trial on Friday for the Grand Départ of the 2022 Tour de France. Sharing 2-Way Fit tubeless & patented lenticular disc construction tech with their Campagnolo parent, the new Fulcrum disc opens up the lightweight modern wheel to time trial and triathlon bikes with any groupset, for both pro & serious amateur cyclists…
Fulcrum Speed 360 DB TT disc wheel
The new Speed 360 disc brake disc project had been developed to outfit the Cofidis team with the fastest possible time trial setup, as they raced Fulcrum wheels with Campagnolo drivetrains up until this season (switching to Corima). Interestingly, Fulcrum says they also worked with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert the last seasons on the project who race on Shimano groupsets, but likely without branding as they are sponsored by Newmen wheels.
Regardless of who sponsors who these days, Fulcrum makes clear that their TT disc wheel can make any modern bike with any modern drivetrain faster.
What’s new?
A big part of what’s unique is hidden inside, even in the tensile structure of the carbon fibers themselves during construction. Fulcrum hypes this exclusive, new & patented construction technology that allows them to build the aerodynamically-optimized double convex curvature shape of the lenticular disc wheel without traditional spokes or spoke-like construction inside to give it support.
They describe the result as fast, lightweight, and reactive with efficient power transmission.
Tech details
Made entirely by hand in Italy, the Fulcrum Speed 360 DB wheel is claimed to weigh just 935g.
At the core of the new disc wheel, a new aluminum centerlock hub is bonded in, spinning of top-tier adjustable cup & cone CULT ceramic bearings made by Campagnolo that do not need grease. Fulcrum says the wheel ultimately has 9x lower drag than conventional bearings.
It also gets more Campy tech in the 19mm internal hooked tubeless 2-Way Fit rim, 26.5mm wide external at the rim.
Fulcrum Speed 360 DB – Pricing, options & availability
The new Fulcrum Speed 360 disc brake disc wheel is available now through dealers for $4049 / 3393€ with a standard Shimano HG freehub body (a tiny bit cheaper than its Campy Bora Ultra WTO TT sibling), but SRAM XDR & Campagnolo N3W freehubs are also available.
The wheel is only available for disc brakes and 12mm thru-axles, but can be used tubeless or with inner tubes. It comes in a single 12k weave carbon finish, with low-key Fulcrum graphics.
