Scania delivers unique 66-ton electric truck to quarry in Norway

In the rapidly-growing EV market, it’s good to be skeptical of superlative claims. It’s anybody’s guess how long the electric truck that Scania recently delivered to the Verdalskalk limestone quarry in Norway will hold the title of the country’s largest, but this is definitely a pretty darn big truck.

This 66-tonne monster has 3 axles, 9 battery packs with 300 kWh of total capacity, a 450 kW motor that delivers 3,500 N-m of torque, a 6-speed gearbox, and charging power of 130 kW. It sports a hydraulic canopy roof from Robol, and comes with a 4-axle tipper trailer.

The new truck will transport around 120,000 tonnes of lime per year from the quarry to a nearby port, cutting fossil fuel consumption on the route by 58,800 litres, and CO2 emissions by 156 tonnes.

There are already over 100 electric Scania trucks on Norwegian roads, but this big boy is not (yet) available on the open market. It’s part of Scania’s Pilot Partner program—a collaboration with selected customers on bespoke electric transport solutions.

“Scania already has a number of heavy vehicles with different development solutions ongoing, but this is the first one we are putting into operation in Norway,” says Tony Sandberg, Director of Pilot Partner at Scania.

Scania has “a long and trusted collaboration with Verdalskalk, so it came naturally to contact them to offer an opportunity to test an electric truck for their transport needs,” said Scania’s Rune Wuttudal. “Verdalskalk has always challenged us to find good and alternative solutions, and to reduce emissions have been on the agenda for many years.”
