MAHLE Powertrain has completed two new testing facilities designed for EVs and hydrogen vehicles in Northampton, England. MAHLE Powertrain has used £15 million ($17.7 million) in investments over a 5-year period to build the new facilities, which will provide engineering services to support its customers.

Manufacturers can rely on the Vehicle Development Centre to test two- and four-wheel drive vehicles at speeds up to 155 mph and throughout a range of environmental conditions. It can simulate temperatures from -40° C to 60° C, humidity levels from 10% to 80% and the pressures associated with altitudes up to 16,400 feet.

The battery testing facility can test battery packs up to 1 MW, and includes a National Grid connection enabling energy to be sent to the grid. The facility also includes its own substation and a fire protection system.

According to the company, it is “already experiencing high levels of interest from automotive manufacturers across the globe, keen to capitalize on the new facility’s capabilities and the company’s expertise in developing innovative solutions.”
