Battery recycling firm Li-Cycle has partnered with Veolia Water Technologies, a designer of water treatment plants and equipment, to use its HPD crystallization technology for battery recycling at its Rochester Hub, a facility scheduled to be fully operational in 2023.

HPD crystallization is used in the final stage of the battery recycling process to produce nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate. Li-Cycle will “utilize Veolia’s HPD crystallizers to produce approximately 42,000 to 48,000 metric tons per year of nickel sulfate and 6,500 to 7,500 metric tons per year of cobalt sulfate that can then be resold to battery manufacturers—ultimately giving the original battery materials a new life.”

Li-Cycle says the facility will “help give life back to the equivalent of approximately 225,000 electric vehicle batteries per year.”
