Allison Transmission has been awarded a $6.55-million contract from the US Army’s Ground Vehicle Systems Center to develop its Next Generation Electrified Transmission, which is intended for parallel-hybrid vehicles. Allison will use the funds “to design, develop and test an electric hybrid sub-system in Allison’s Next Generation Electrified Transmission for armored combat vehicles.”

The Next Generation Electrified Transmission includes a 220 kW electric motor and inverter that provide on-board vehicle power. “Our technology will deliver electric hybrid propulsion using blended torque that provides edge-of-the box performance or true engine-off silent mobility,” says VP of Defense Programs at Allison Transmission Dana Pittard.

Allison says American Rheinmetall Vehicles has chosen the Next Generation Electrified Transmission for its Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) offering, and it expects the transmission to meet the US Army’s OMFV and Main Battle Tank requirements.

“For fleets that are developing new wheeled or tracked vehicles, Allison can tailor a transmission, electric hybrid or electric propulsion solution specifically for that application,” says Pittard. “Allison engineers and manufactures reliable and fully customizable propulsion solutions, so customers experience reduced downtime and increased ability to accomplish mission objectives.”
