Airbus and Renault team up to advance research on electrification

Airbus and Renault Group have signed an R&D agreement under which their engineering teams will join forces to improve energy storage-related technologies. More specifically, the cooperation agreement will focus on technologies related to energy management optimization and battery weight improvement, including solid-state battery designs, which some say could double the energy density of batteries in the 2030 timeframe.

The teams will also study the lifecycle of future batteries, from production to recyclability, in order to prepare for the industrialization of future battery designs while assessing their carbon footprints across their entire lifecycles.

“Driven by the same ambition to innovate and reduce the carbon footprint, our engineering teams are exchanging experience with those of Airbus to converge transversal technologies that will enable both hybrid aircraft to be operated and the vehicles of tomorrow to be developed,” said Gilles Le Borgne, Executive VP, Engineering, Renault Group.

“This cross-industry partnership with Renault Group will help us mature the next generation of batteries as part of Airbus’s electrification roadmap,” said Sabine Klauke, Airbus Chief Technical Officer.
