Phoenix Motorcars and CATL partner on battery development

Phoenix Motorcars has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese battery-maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to co-develop batteries for Phoenix’s product lines.

The MOU will support the long-term supply of battery packs and related products for Phoenix’s commercial EVs, including Gen 4 models, as well as potential cooperation on future generations of vehicles. The companies may also collaborate on the deployment of E-rolling chassis technology in Phoenix EVs.

CATL’s E-rolling technology was developed for commercial vehicles by its subsidiary Suzhou Synland Power Technology. It consists of a separate frame-construction chassis that integrates a coaxial e-beam, frame, electronic devices and the battery pack, which in turn is integrated with the power domain controller. This technology works with pickups, light trucks, vans and RVs.

“We are thrilled to be working with CATL,” said Phoenix Motorcars CEO Dr. Lance Zhou, “as we develop and produce our Gen 4 medium-duty vehicles and explore further cooperation, including Gen 5 ground-up chassis vehicles and the EdisonFuture (Gen 6) line of light-duty vehicles. We are also very keen on the E-rolling chassis technology, which would enable simplified, highly integrated and light-weighted design of e-chassis to achieve higher energy efficiency in commercial vehicles.”
