Charged EVs | Wolfspeed to build silicon carbide wafer factory in North Carolina

Wolfspeed, a silicon carbide and gallium nitride technology company, is planning to build a new facility to manufacture 200 mm silicon carbide wafers in Chatham County, North Carolina. The wafers will supply the company’s Mohawk Valley Fab—a silicon carbide fabrication facility.

The company hopes the new facility will enable it to increase production capacity 10-fold relative to its materials facility in Durham, and says it expects phase one of the construction to be finished in 2024 at a cost of about $1.3 billion.

“Between 2024 and the end of the decade, the company will add additional capacity as needed, eventually occupying more than one million square feet on the 445-acre site,” says Wolfspeed.
