STMicroelectronics introduces improved silicon-carbide power modules

Global semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics has released new high-power modules for EVs that it says will boost performance and driving range. They will be used for Hyundai’s E-GMP EV platform, which is shared by the Kia EV6 and other models.

The company’s five new third-generation SiC-MOSFET-based modules cover a range of power ratings and operating voltages commonly used in EV traction applications.

According to ST, which says it has supplied its STPOWER SiC devices to more than three million mass-produced passenger cars worldwide, its smaller SiC devices are superior to conventional silicon power semiconductors. The company says they are able to handle higher operating voltages, allowing for faster charging and better vehicle dynamics, and that they also increase energy efficiency, driving range and reliability.
