Hyundai breaks ground on Georgia EV and battery plant
Hyundai has broken ground on a new manufacturing plant at the Bryan County Mega Site in Georgia. At the new plant, where the automaker and its affiliate suppliers are expected to invest some $5.54 billion, Hyundai plans to produce a diverse range of Hyundai, Genesis and Kia EVs, as well as batteries. The new plant is part of a strategy to establish a stable supply chain for EV batteries and other EV components in the US. The new factory is expected to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025.
“Today, our EVs are recognized as best in class,” said Hyundai Executive Chair Euisun Chung. “We are determined to be the global leader in electrification, safety, quality, and sustainability.”
Hyundai says the new plant will have a highly connected, automated and flexible manufacturing system that organically connects all elements of the EV ecosystem. All processes—order collection, procurement, logistics and production—will be optimized using AI and data. The plant will rely primarily on renewable energy sources and use emission-reduction technologies to meet the RE100 requirements.
Hyundai has set a global target to sell 3.23 million EVs annually by 2030. To realize this goal, it plans to establish an EV production network around the globe.
