Electrify America is becoming an essential stakeholder in the electrification of the Port of Long Beach’s drayage fleet. The company plans to install 30 electric fleet-dedicated chargers paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Port, as part of EA’s $25-million Green City investment at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
Electrify America will provide tailored charging solutions for a fleet of 60 electric trucks, including Class 8 Volvo and Kenworth trucks, operated by 4 Gen Logistics. The 30 new chargers will offer power levels from 150 to 350 kW. A behind-the-meter BESS will store energy when electricity costs are low, and discharge energy during peak usage times, minimizing impact on the electrical grid and mitigating demand surges.
EA and 4 Gen are also working on a similar facility to serve drayage trucks, with 14 fleet chargers and a BESS, in Rialto, California. The Rialto charging station is expected to open next year.
“We can have a tremendous impact by bringing electric vehicle charging technology and zero-emissions trucks together to provide a more sustainable way to transport shipping containers to and from the Long Beach Port,” said Rachel Moses, Director of Commercial Services, Green Cities & Business Development at Electrify America.
